Shields joined the firm to continue his long career as an attorney on the Treasure Coast. Upon graduating with Honors from Florida State University College of Law, he and his wife moved to Stuart where he started private practice as a trial attorney, she taught school, and they raised two boys. His experience includes being lead counsel in many substantial personal injury and wrongful death jury trials as well as in business and divorce litigation. The peer-reviewed lawyer rating company, Martindale-Hubbell, has given Shields its highest rating of “AV” “Preeminent” since 1992. Eventually, the governor appointed Shields to the Circuit Court bench where he presided over hearings of divorces and other family matters and all kinds of civil litigation and jury trials. After retiring from the court, he chose to keep active in the legal field. He also developed a new practice as a mediator and arbitrator. Shields is a leader in the legal, non-profit, and civic community having served as an officer or director of many local and state organizations and continues to do so.
